ATHLETIC COMMISSION GIVES THANKS Thanks to all who made this year of sports a huge success! The athletes, for their hard work and commitment and the extra effort they all gave to be great sports and great representatives of our school. The coaches, for the extra effort they give to prepare our athletes, not only for practices and games, but to apply sportsmanship principles to their everyday life. The coordinators, the people behind the scenes that make sure everything gets done and runs smoothly; from rosters to practice schedules to game preparation, and from gym scheduling to uniforms. The parents, for their unending support. Not only for your support at games, but also the things that go unnoticed - the countless hours spent practicing with your child at home, and teaching them good sportsmanship. They don't just get their drive, determination and commitment from team practice and games; a lot of it comes from the constant positive attitude and reinforcement they receive at home. Finally: our Principal, teachers and administration. You support our athletes by attending games and giving them that positive boost, and this means so much to them. To have a Principal who understands the importance of a solid athletic program means a great deal to this organization. We all understand that academics come first, but the life lessons learned on the field or on the court are so important to our children’s development - they gain qualities they will possess for the rest of their lives. We look forward to working with all of you, and having another great season, next year. |
ATHLETIC COMMISSION NEWS The Athletic Commission has significant plans for this coming school year - trying to better our facilities and adding new programs - and is looking forward to bigger and better things. Things to remember as summer ends and you are getting ready for school: Look to sign up for Soccer, Volleyball (Boys Volleyball is an option) and Basketball at Meet Your Teacher Day on August 8th. Because the sport’s season start shortly after the school year begins, the earlier we can get athletes’ commitments, the sooner we can make up the rosters and get ready for the season. Look also for the ability to order athletic wear off the Internet - we hope to have this going by the start of school. In the meantime, call me and I can email you a form: Todd Jelinek, 210-3336. The Athletic Commission wishes everyone a fun and safe summer! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL St. Eugene Catholic Church is hosting this year's Vacation Bible School the week of July 7th - 11th, in the evenings from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Get ready for a Power Lab of fun science activities! Registration information will be in the Church Bulletin soon. We need many high energy volunteers! For more information, or to sign up to be a leader for your favorite station (before they fill up!), call Robyn Duginski at 748-5061. RUBY ANN JORDAN’S MOM IS THE BEST The third grade students at St. Eugene School recently entered the “Best Mom” contest promoted by the Village Library. Four of our students were selected to be among the top five contestants. They are: Jessica Holley, Adriann Crawford, Anamaria Pasillas, and Ruby Ann Jordan. On Saturday, May 10th, the results were announced and Ruby Ann Jordan won the “Best Mom” Contest with the following essay: “Why my mom is the best: My name is Ruby Ann Jordan and my mom is the best because with everything she has been through since I have been born she has managed to keep my life as normal, fun and simple as possible. I was born in 1998, and in 1999 my dad was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer, and from 1999 to 2003 we went to several doctors and spent quite a lot of time at the hospital. We lived in the country at the time so we had to move to the city and because of the situation it took my mom 3 months to unpack. After my dad beat his first round of cancer, he had a triple bypass and spent a month and a half in the hospital, then we found out he now has lung cancer, so every week he has to go out of town for treatment. Through all of this my mom, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, has managed to keep some sort of normal life for me. She has moved us to a better place to live, help coach my softball team, still volunteer at church, take me to my Girl Scout meetings and practices and games, work full time, take care of me, my dad, my dog, two cats, and do the cooking, cleaning, help me with my homework, make sure we all have what we need for the next day, and somehow, still keep things running smooth around the house. My mom always has a positive attitude, is level headed, and always finds time through her days which usually start around 5:30 am and end somewhere around 11:00 pm, to teach me how to laugh, love, pray, and have fun. She gets through her days on lots of faith, prayer and by staying positive. Her favorite phrase is, “Let go and let God.” She uses this phrase when things happen that are beyond her control. She is trying to teach me to stay focused on the important things in life, school, family, church, hope, fun, and staying positive. My mom does not even complain about all the things that she has to be responsible for. Because, she said that there is no time to complain about it, it would not do any good, therefore what would be the point. Things still have to get done. And since there is no one else to do them then she has to do them. She tries to teach me different things like laundry, and keeping my room clean, so that I will have time for fun things after my homework. Since I am an only child, I depend on my mom for a lot of her time, and even though she has a lot to do, she always finds the time for me. And that is why my mom is my role model and my hero, because she does not know how to quit. She credits her mom and the way that she was raised, for giving her the drive and the courage to keep going. I love my mom very much and hope that I grow up to be the kind of person that my mom is. This is why I feel like my mom is the best mom in the world. And I dare anyone to tell me any different. Ruby Ann Jordan” Ruby Ann is the daughter of Bruce and Carrie Jordan, and the granddaughter of our new secretary, Carole Smith. Congratulations Ruby Ann and Mrs. Carrie Jordan!

Collect any of the following items and drop them off in the colorful box labeled ‘Want to Help People?’ under the sign-in desk in front of the school office (large items can be left to the side of the desk). · Pull tabs off cans: for the Ronald McDonald House. · Old cell phones: charged to dial 911 for battered women. · Eyeglasses: sent to third world countries. · Teddy bears, tote bags/backpacks, infant blankets/quilts, and children’s books: given to comfort children taken to The Care Center, www.carecenter-okc.org. The Care Center is a child abuse response and evaluation facility here in OKC where children are brought after abuse occurs in the home. The teddy bears are given as ‘friends’ to the children. The tote bags or backpacks need to include basic items a child needs to spend the night away from home (comb, brush, toothbrush, toothpaste). The center is also always in need of infant blankets and quilts, and books for children of all ages. These things make a huge difference to those in need. Thank you for your help! CONSULTANTS CORNER by Dr. Mary Brandt
Promoting Your Child’s EQ As adults, we know all too well that the road of life is marked with potholes, steep hills and sometimes even major detours. As parents and teachers, we also know that if we can foster optimism and resilience in our children, they will have the courage to face life’s challenges. Learning how to understand and manage our own emotions as well as empathizing with others are two of the basic skills outlined by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligences. Since the book’s publication over a decade ago, research has verified that “people skills” are as important as academic skill. Metamood, or having the ability to think about one’s feelings, is being promoted by psychologists and educators alike as a way to increase success in school, relationships and even life itself. Intelligence and great people skills are not always developed simultaneously. The critical life skills of self control, motivation, delayed gratification, honesty and empathy, goal setting, optimism and resilience can be taught and supported. Teach Possibilities Encourage children to view required activities, like academics and P.E., as ways to try out different things, a smorgasbord of choices. Our children look to us for cues about how to respond. If we overreact and view imperfections as failure, we can limit our child’s development of resilience. Teachers and parents have the unique position of helping children recognize areas in which they excel. Identifying islands of competence can make coping with areas of challenge easier. Encourage Reasonable Risk Taking The best way to encourage children to try new things is to model that behavior. Parents and teachers who share their own stumbling blocks as well as their willingness to try some new activity or food can positively influence their children to do the same. Children can be taught to weigh the positive aspects of something and to consider the many different ways to look at any situation. Help Identify and Manage Feelings When children get upset, focus on helping them use the vocabulary to express the feelings they are experiencing. This often takes the wind out of the tantrum. Focus on teaching self-calming first and problem-solving second. If we can help children: (1) identify what they’re feeling; (2) accept that feelings are okay; and (3) explore acceptable ways to manage these feelings, we can help build self-control and improve problem-solving skills to be used at a later date. Resilience, optimism and emotional problem-solving give us the courage to face the challenges life throws us. By equipping our children with these foundational values at an early age, we can better prepare them for the road ahead. -- Dr. Mary Brandt, Educational/Behavioral Consultant for St. Eugene Catholic School, is available to meet with parents upon request. PARENT PARTNERSHIP HANDBOOK SPRING FEVER (Part 2 of 2) Teachers face an uphill battle against the “laid back” effect of spring. They need all the support that a parent can muster to keep students on track. In order to eliminate feelings of inferiority and to foster positive self-esteem, children require practices that increase a sense of industry and competence. Balance Activity Balance a day with sufficient rest, school, play or unwind time, homework, family time, chores, extra-curricular interests, prayer time, bath time, etc. At present, being a student is the primary vocation obligation of a child. Sports, dance, and other interests are secondary. Sufficient sleep is essential to successful performance. Provide Sufficient Sleeptime Each child is unique. Parents are the best judge of how much sleep a particular child requires in order to be alert, pleasant and cooperative the next day. Generally, however, experts suggest that children ages 6-9 require ten hours of sleep; ages 10-12 need nine hours; and teens function best with 8 to 9.5 hours nightly. Sleep deprivation adds up over time, and it can lead to decreased attentiveness, decreased short-term memory, inconsistent performance, and delayed response time. These can cause generally bad tempers and problems in school. In adolescents, sleep deprivation might lead to stimulant use, and driving accidents. Home Industry (Ages 6-12 and Beyond) Industry, or accomplishment, is the capacity to be persistent and diligent, to follow through on a task, and to create a systematic approach for problem solving and responsibilities. Industry requires that children learn to give steady care over time to projects, become goal setters, meet deadlines and finish tasks, develop organizational skills, and set realistic time expectations. Parents foster industry when they: · affirm productivity and accomplishment, · encourage self-completion, · model time management and planning, · and work with students on difficult tasks. -- Dr. Pat McCormack is an international consultant and public speaker on issues of whole-person formation. PARENT PARTNERSHIP HANDBOOK SPRING FEVER (Part 1 of 2) Teachers face an uphill battle against the “laid back” effect of spring. They need all the support that a parent can muster to keep students on track. In order to eliminate feelings of inferiority and to foster positive self-esteem, children require practices that increase a sense of industry and competence. Practice Time Management Organizing time is essential to success. Set goals and use a timer as a periodic “on task” reminder. With young children, play “beat the clock.” Preview daily homework and establish time frames. If a child becomes blocked by frustration, switch subjects or reverse mealtime or bath time with study time. Make a task chart. As early as possible have the child create the list and submit it for input. For a long-range project use a calendar to break the assignment into manageable sections. Build in time for library use and shopping for supplies. Retain School Schedules Homework – Maintain time, place, and expectations for daily homework even when your child reports that there is none. In the absence of an assignment, use the time for review or enrichment. Bedtime – Be consistent with curfew and bedtime rituals. Establish a quieting-down time 20-30 minutes before sleep-time. Eliminate TV, stereo, computer, and electronic media from the bedroom, or at least turn off all equipment. Establish a ritual for saying goodnight. Chores – Chores give a sense of belonging and ownership for the family. Assign or choose-by-lot age-appropriate tasks that help family life. Review chores periodically. Mealtime – As frequently as possible, sit down at the family table for dinner. Provide nutritious meals and restrict sugar intake and fast food. If possible, prepare lunches before bedtime so as to free time in the morning. TV, surfing the internet, IM communication, and electronic games – On school days limit recreational access to electronic media to an hour. -- Dr. Pat McCormack is an international consultant and public speaker on issues of whole-person formation. COFFEE & DONUTS HELP NEEDED Please contact Holly McLaughlin at748-7426 if you are able to do Coffee & Donuts after the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, April 6th. “MAKE NEW FRIENDS, BUT KEEP THE OLD, ONE IS SILVER AND THE OTHER, GOLD.” We have all heard this special saying, but it seems very appropriate as we say goodbye to Nancy Petromilli, and welcome Carole Smith as our new School Secretary. Nancy has blessed so many lives in the last 16 years ministering to the students, teachers and parents of St. Eugene Catholic School. She truly lives the altruism, ‘actions speak louder than words’ because her actions are always of service! So it is no surprise that at this time she needs to leave us and spend more time with her mother. Would we expect anything less from Nancy? Please join us to honor Nancy this coming Sunday morning in the Fellowship Hall after 10 a.m. Mass! As hard as goodbyes are, it is also a time for us to grow with the ministry of a new school secretary, Mrs. Carole Smith. Mrs. Smith comes to us from a long career at the Oklahoma Medical Board, and is used to working as a member of a team to achieve the mission. She also enjoys writing and has published articles. She raised her family at Our Lady’s Cathedral and Bishop John Carroll School, and now attends Epiphany of the Lord Parish. Please welcome her to our community on April 1, 2008!

COFFEE AND DONUTS HELP NEEDED Please contact Holly McLaughlin at748-7426 if you are able to do Coffee & Donuts after the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, April 6th. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students who recognize their personal learning style and use strategies appropriate to that style become successful learners. At school, we try to help each student become aware of what makes learning easier for him or her. Through observation, talking with your child, and trying some simple experiments, you can help identify his or her personal learning style. Knowing whether sight, hearing, or touch is the dominant sense is important. Try saying a series of ten numbers aloud and see how many the child can recall. Let the child see another set of numbers and try to recall them without looking back. Then let him or her copy a few simple designs and try to redraw them from memory. Try similar experiments with words and pictures. You may discover that your child is a visual learner, an auditory learner, a kinesthetic learner, or a combination of two types. In the classroom, we try to teach in a way that will consider each student’s dominant sense. Some children may learn easily from pictures, maps, charts, or graphs while others may need to hear an oral explanation of what they are seeing. Still others need to be doing something involving movement as they learn (perhaps making their own map, graph, or illustration). Environmental factors such as light, sound, and temperature affect ability to learn. Subjects taught in an individual’s peak performance time may seem easier because of that reason. A child’s maturity, motivation, and sense of responsibility affect her or his approach to learning. Helping your young person find out what works best is certainly a worthwhile goal for you, and the student who learns to “work smarter, not harder” is likely to be a successful student. Peace, Mrs. Suzette Williams

DAILY PRAYER – FRIDAY, 4TH WEEK OF LENT Meditation: May we reach out with joy to grasp your hand. We keep acknowledging that God is the source of our life. We realize that we have been seeking other sources of life. We recognize our weakness and turn to God for help. Though our hearts are being opened up to their depths, though we cry out to God for help, we are not discouraged. The Lord is near to broken hearts. When the just cry out, the Lord hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. The Lord is close to the broken hearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. -- Adapted from ‘Praying Lent 2008,’ an online service of Creighton University, found at www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent. |

EAGLE EXPRESS MARCH PUBLISHING SCHEDULE Friday, March 7th, is the last Eagle Express until after Easter Sunday. Regular publication resumes Easter Monday, March 24th. DAILY PRAYER – FRIDAY, 3RD WEEK OF LENT Reading: Mk 12:28-34 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he. And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions. Daily Meditation: Fill our hearts with your love. Our lesson today reminds us again of God's love and Jesus' desire that we love one another as we are loved. On this journey, we are learning why this is a challenge for us. We are experiencing our human weaknesses and practicing ways to be freer, to open our hearts more fully to God's love and to give ourselves in fidelity, every day. “You ask us to express our thanks by self-denial. We are to master our sinfulness and conquer our pride. We are to show to those in need your goodness to ourselves.” -- Preface for Lent III -- Adapted from ‘Praying Lent 2008,’ an online service of Creighton University, found at www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent.

IS YOUR FAMILY “ON A MISSION?” Lent offers an opportunity to engage your closest mission field: your family. How many times has some parent exclaimed, “I wish I had done more!” to involve youngsters in parish mission? Father Frank DeSiano, CSP, will be at St. Eugene parish this weekend, February 23-24, to preach at all Masses and to open doors to faith for the whole family. Fr. DeSiano brings many years of experience in the field of evangelization in addition to service as pastor, speaker, author, and mission director. His message will address living our faith through discipleship and evangelization. Plan now to start or reinforce your family’s tradition of being in the mission experience together during this time. This Mission is offered February 25 - 27 (English), and February 28 - March 1 (Spanish), beginning each evening at 7 p.m. TO OUR STUDENTS, WITH GRATITUDE Dear Fr. Jacobi, Thank you for the recent check for $1,889.91 from the schoolchildren’s weekly School Mass collections. Their gift was indeed God’s answer to our prayers. As in Oklahoma, this is the cold and flu season in Nigeria. Some of the children have had to have medicines from the doctors, and when unexpected expenses come, it is hard to stay within a planned budget for so many children. The gifts from the children of St. Eugene’s school are truly a blessing. I have already forwarded the money to Fr. John Bosco, and he and the children send their heartfelt thanks and wishes for a wonderful Lenten Season. Sincerely in Christ, Susan Weems Volunteer U.S. Coordinator, Catholic Chess Project YOUR PTO NEEDS YOU Dear Parents, Please prayerfully consider becoming an active PTO Volunteer this coming school year.
